Centre for Buddhist Studies, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala has been functioning since Sept 2025 and growing academically and logistically. It offers one year Diploma course in Buddhist Studies. This program consists of a composite curriculum consisting of History of Buddhist traditions, a text-based study of different philosophical systems of India and a Comparative Study of Religions. This Diploma Course in Buddhist Studies has been created to deepen understanding of this heritage, covering Buddhist literature, history, architecture, and practical training through projects in museums and monasteries. The skills imparted to students extend from rigorous reading of literary and philosophical texts to archaeological training. The wider social-historical-cultural- religious contexts of the development of the Buddhist traditions are examined through an innovative and intra-subject curriculum.
The Centre encourages critical thinking and explores the cultural and historical contexts of Buddhist traditions both within India and abroad. Its diploma courses promote collaborative research, engaging students in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies related to intercultural and multicultural topics.
